Cross-section restoration is a powerful
tool for checking if interpreted fault and horizon geometries can
be restored to valid pre-deformation states.
Essentially footwall cutoffs should correspond to hangingwall cutoffs
when deformation is restored, with no gaps or overlaps in the restoration.
It provides a robust method of evaluating structural histories.
Geosec software can address extensional and reverse faulting, folding,
ductile deformation, halokinesis and the overprinting of several
deformation events.
Section restoration allows:
- evaluation of the geometric validity
of seismic interpretations and constraint to be placed on fault
and horizon mapping
- illustration of timing and magnitude
of major phases of basin formation and later modification
- assessment of the history of structural
elements e.g. displacement histories for key faults
- evaluation of pre-rift structural
and stratigraphic patterns
