Our approach to reducing risk in mineral exploration incorporates the following:

  1. Applying basin analysis techniques to identify mineral systems for sediment-hosted mineral deposits. and generate new exploration targets.
  2. Determining the stratigraphic and tectonic development, the burial history and generation of hydrothermal systems, the fluid transport pathways and ore trapping sites in prospective areas.
  3. Focussing work plans and reducing geological risk.

We can resolve problems using structural modelling techniques (see our section restoration page), to understand complex structures in extensional and inverted basins, and in fold and thrust belts, leading to validation of the interpretation.

We work from the macro to the micro scale, and vice versa, to unravel the structural development and the controls on mineral deposition.

Techniques

  • Integration of information from all data types - geological maps, borehole data, seismic lines, fieldwork, and gravity and magnetics, to generate geological models and unravel structural complexities.
  • Structural modelling - construction, restoration and forward modelling of cross-sections to validate interpretations.

Forward modelling of antithetic thrusts

  • Generation of robust structural maps from borehole and underground data, using fault analysis techniques, to determine the geometry and extent of ore deposits.
  • Analysis of small scale structures to be used in mine development.
  • Seismic interpretation for deposit evaluation, mine planning, and regional exploration.

Examples of recent projects

  • Section restoration of compressional and extensional structures in a carbonate hosted Pb-Zn mine, Ireland.
  • Regional structural modelling and basin analysis combined with 3D mine interpretation, Witwatersrand Basin.
  • Mine-scale to regional-scale evaluation of Cu deposits to identify new exploration areas, Africa.
  • Regional thrust belt development and identification of new mineral systems, Morocco.
  • Regional structural review and section restoration to generate new exploration projects, Mount Isa.
  • Mine based studies in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Southern Africa.
