ABAL were commissioned by Murphy Petroleum Ltd to conduct a study on a key fault bounding one of their prospects. The objectives of the study included fault analysis to check the robustness of the mapping interpretation, and evaluation of fault seal potential to assess the probability of the fault holding back a significant hydrocarbon column.

A typical fault seal probability plot, which is colour coded along strike according to the degree of fault seal potential along the fault, also see Faultmap.

A typical detailed fault plane diagram used to show where areas of reservoir interval are juxtaposed against themselves or other non-sealing or sealing intervals.

Simple fault throw plot (c), and fault plane diagram (d) are usually the first stage of fault analysis. They are used to assess the validity of fault interpretation and mapping package quality. The bullseyes were the result of poorly imaged portions of the fault zone where footwall and hangingwall reflectors were not clearly resolved.
